Rauðinúpur is a 73 metre-high rock formation which stands on the westernmost part of Melrakkaslétta. A good hiking trail runs up onto Rauðinúpur, from where there are excellent views, and the rock is used as a landmark by boats. In it there’s a bowl formation, as Rauðinúpur is thought to have been an old volcano. Its red colour is from cinder.
