Downtown Reykjavík has a buzzing café culture, although the distinction between cafés, bars, clubs, and pubs is far from clear.

There are many daytime cafés that turn into tightly packed bars and clubs during the night, some staying open until five in the morning.

However, if you aren’t into nightlife, you shouldn’t let that scare you away. Even the cafés that turn into bars later on are smoke free and family friendly, and some are specifically dedicated to families and kids.

While many of the best cafés are in the Reykjavík area, you’ll discover good places all over the country.
