Geysir

Another “must” for sightseers, which has lent its name (meaning “Gusher”) as the generic term for this strange phenomenon of spouting hot springs.

A smaller, adjacent hot spring, Strokkur, is a popular attraction, erupting at 5-10-minute intervals. The Geysir geothermal field contains a variety of hot springs and bubbling pools. The area is protected. Geysisstofa, an educational and information centre is concerned with volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, glaciers, hot springs, waterfalls and vegetation. There is also a technological exhibition on geology in Iceland

Near Geysir is the largest national forest in south Iceland, Haukadalsskogur
