Bakkafjörður in Langanesbyggð

A town situated by the fjord of the same name. Bakkafjörður leads inland to the south, from Bakkaflói bay.

Trade began there in 1888 and fishing at about the same time. The town flourished in the first decades of the 20th century, but post-1930 the population began to decline. Fishing from the town is limited to small vessels at present.

A good hiking path, some 8 km long, runs along Viðvíkurdalur valley, between Bakkafjörður and Viðvík.

The area was inhabited up to the beginning of the last century.
