Raufarhöfn is on the eastern shore of Melrakkaslétta. During the years of large herring catches in the mid 20th century, Raufarhöfn was one of the main landing and processing stations, and one of Iceland’s largest export harbours. There are numerous marked walking paths in the area. On Melrakkaaslétta, above Raufarhöfn, work is already underway on Heimskautsgerði, a unique public artwork that has references to Old Norse religion.
