Ólafsfjörður in Fjallabyggð

Ólafsfjörður is in a fjord of the same name that juts into Tröllaskagi peninsula. Settled at the turn of the 19th century, it has a good natural harbour which is important as the economy is based on the fisheries. Iceland's first memorial to drowned seamen, built in 1940, is by the church. A tunnel through Ólafsfjarðarmúli, 3.4 km long, links Ólafsfjörður to Eyjafjörður.
