Möðruvellir in Hörgárdalur

One of the main historical sites in North Iceland is this church at the mouth of Hörgardalur valley. A monastery was established there in 1296, and the regional governor lived there from 1797-1874. Writer Jón Sveinsson (Nonni) (1857-1944) was born there and several poets are buried in the cemetery. The present church was built in 1868.
