Large lava field, named after a local cave-dwelling giant in the Saga of Grettir the Strong.

The lava flowed from the north-western rim of Langjökull glacier, and entered Hvítá river. This is the largest lava field of Borgarfjörður district, being about 52 km long and 7 km wide where it is widest.

There are many caves in the lava field, including the three largest in Iceland: Surtshellir, Stefánshellir and Víðgelmir, which is actually the largest lava cave in the world at 1,460 m in length. Víðgelmir cave, 2 km from Fljótstunga at Hvítársíða, is one of the largest caves in the world in volume.
