Goðafoss Waterfall

Waterfall on the river Skjálfandafljót, not far from the main road at Fosshóll in Bárðardalur valley. The waterfall can be viewed from several places, and the river enters a chasm beneath it.

The name Goðafoss ("Waterfall of the Gods") refers to the incident when Þorgeir the Lawspeaker, riding home to Ljósavatn after ruling at the Þingvellir assembly that Iceland should adopt Christianity, threw away his pagan idols into the waterfall and took the faith himself.
